Just last week, one of our staunch 'allies' in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, made headlines with their progressive views on justice and commitment to gender equality by BEHEADING a woman convicted of SORCERY (yes, you DID read correctly). In the interest of fairness, they did chop a man's head off for the same charge back in September. We've hung our share of witches here in the states... back in the 1600's! However, they own the oil, so any real commentary will have to be handled by Amnesty International, not our State Dept.

Recently, another Saudi woman was sentenced to be publicly flogged for DRIVING. A closer look, however, reveals her true crime. She posted the video of her drive on YouTube in order to gain some gender support. The Saudi legislative assembly, the Shura Council, released a report on the impact of women being permitted to drive this month. The Shura report warns that driving would mean the end of virginity in Saudi Arabia! I wish I'd known that when I was a teenager. I'd have just let my date drive! The report also contains graphic warnings that allowing women to drive would increase prostitution, pornography, homosexuality and divorce. WOW!

It amazes me how we collectively turn a blind-eye while continuing to support such primitive 'friends'. I know we need allies in the region, but maybe we're being too conveniently neutral on the bigger issues. Now pardon me while I lock up my daughters.
